telc B1 Listening: Tasks and Strategy

The Listening part of the telc Deutsch B1 consists of several recordings with different characteristics. The tasks are closed (true/false, multiple choice). You usually hear each recording once — with the exception of certain short messages, which are played twice. Check the mandatory number of playbacks in the current model test.

What you will hear
Typical recordings include everyday announcements (train station, airport, radio), a personal conversation between two people, and a longer interview or report.
The speaking speed is typical for B1 — not artificially slow, but also not native speaker news tempo.
Notes during listening
You are allowed to write in the booklet. Use the time before each recording to read the questions and highlight keywords.
Only jot down keywords during the recording — full sentences steal attention. Transfer your answers to the answer sheet at the end, if time is provided for it.
Classic traps
Numbers, times, and prices are often corrected ("No, not 15 o'clock, but 16 o'clock") — listen until the end of the statement.
Distractors often mention all three options, but only one is the actual answer. Wait for confirmation ("So we'll take...") in the text.
If you miss something
Keep listening calmly. Leave missed answers blank at the end and then fill in an educated guess — empty fields guarantee zero points.

Do I hear the recordings once or twice?
That depends on the task. Some shorter recordings are played twice, others only once. The mandatory rule is stated in the current model test.
