Failed the telc Deutsch B1 — next steps

The result sheet shows points per task for Reading, Language Elements, Listening and Writing (written sub-exam) and for the oral sub-exam. Two conditions must be met at the same time: at least 60 percent in the written part AND at least 60 percent in the oral part.

Locate the part with the lowest score. Very often it is Writing or Language Elements — both are noticeably improvable with focused training in a few weeks.

At telc, many exam centres allow you to retake the written and oral sub-exams separately. Within a deadline, the passed sub-exam result stays valid.

Important: not every exam centre applies this rule identically. Ask in writing about the exact deadline and the registration procedure for the retake. Conditions may vary between centres.

Writing rarely fails on vocabulary; it fails on structure — missing salutation, closing formula, and three clear paragraphs for the three task points. Train a fixed skeleton.

Language Elements fails on grammar building blocks: prepositions with fixed cases, connectors, polite Konjunktiv II, passive forms. This set is finite and learnable.

The oral exam fails on free speaking: too many pauses, unfinished sentences. Learn set phrases for Part 1 (contact), Part 2 (present a topic) and Part 3 (plan something) by heart.

Four weeks until the retake are enough if you only redo one part and practise 45–60 minutes per day consistently.

Week 1: analyse first-attempt errors. Week 2: model tasks under time pressure. Week 3: two full simulations of the affected part. Week 4: polish, rest, plan exam day properly.

First mistake: relearning the part you already passed. That is wasted time — rely on the passed sub-exam result if the deadline allows.

Second mistake: reworking familiar model exams. You already know the answers — the practice loses diagnostic value. Use new model tasks or unseen exercises.

Third mistake: retaking too fast. If you failed an important part clearly (e.g. below 40 percent), four weeks are too few. Plan eight to twelve weeks honestly.
