IELTS Academic: the full picture in ten minutes

The exam measures how well you can understand and produce academic English in listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The Listening and Speaking tests are the same for every IELTS candidate; the Reading and Writing tests differ between the Academic and General Training versions. Academic Reading uses passages from journals, books, and magazines with an academic register; Academic Writing asks you to describe a visual and to write an argumentative essay.

The exam is not a knowledge test. You are not expected to know the subject of a passage in advance; you are expected to read carefully, answer accurately, write clearly, and speak fluently on unfamiliar topics.

The three written sections are taken back-to-back on the same day, in the fixed order Listening → Reading → Writing. Speaking is a face-to-face or video interview with a certified examiner and may be scheduled on the same day or up to seven days before or after the written test.

Each section is reported on a 0 to 9 scale in whole or half bands. The overall band is the average of the four section bands, rounded to the nearest half band. Most university entry requirements sit between 6.0 and 7.5 overall, often with a minimum in each section.

Descriptors for Writing and Speaking are published by IELTS and cover four criteria per skill (for Writing: Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy). Reading and Listening are marked from the number of correct answers using a raw-to-band table that varies slightly by paper.

The exam content is identical on paper and computer. On computer-delivered IELTS, Listening does not include the 10-minute transfer time — you type answers directly. Results usually arrive faster (typically 3 to 5 days) than for the paper test (usually 13 days). Speaking remains a live interview in both formats.

Choose the format you can work with most naturally. If your typing is slow or you are more used to writing on paper, the paper test is not a disadvantage. If you prefer editing on screen and want faster results, the computer version is convenient.

IELTS Academic is accepted by universities in the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the US, and by many programmes across Europe and Asia. It is also accepted for some professional registration bodies (for example, medical and nursing councils in various countries) and for immigration purposes in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.

Test Report Forms are typically valid for two years from the test date. Always check the exact score and validity requirements of the receiving institution before you book.
