IELTS Academic Ratgeber
IELTS Academic vs IELTS General Training
Von PreparaioAktualisiert am
IELTS offers two versions: Academic and General Training. Listening and Speaking are identical between them. The differences sit in Reading and Writing, and they reflect how the exam is used.
Inhalt
Reading: academic passages vs everyday texts
Academic Reading has three long passages from journals, books, and magazines with an academic register. General Training Reading has three sections that increase in difficulty: short workplace or social texts (Section 1), workplace-related texts (Section 2), and one long piece with a more argumentative register (Section 3).
Question types overlap heavily, but the reading load and register differ. Academic candidates need to be comfortable with abstract argument; General Training candidates need to be comfortable with practical information.
Writing: visual vs letter, essay in both
Academic Writing Task 1 is a 150+ word description of a visual (chart, table, process, or map). General Training Writing Task 1 is a 150+ word letter (formal, semi-formal, or informal) responding to a situation. Both versions have the same 250+ word essay in Task 2.
Who takes which version
Academic is required for university admission and for many professional registrations. General Training is used for secondary education, work experience, training programmes, and for some immigration routes (for example UK Home Office visas, Canada Permanent Residence, Australia Skilled Migration). Always check the exact requirement of the receiving body — many programmes are strict about which version they accept.
Can you switch between versions?
You cannot change version after booking; you book the version you take. If you took the wrong version, you must book the right one and take that test again. This is one of the most common avoidable mistakes.
Häufige Fragen
Is General Training easier?
The public raw-to-band tables show a slightly higher raw-mark requirement in General Training Reading for the same band, reflecting the more everyday register. Neither version is objectively easier overall.
Do universities ever accept General Training?
Very rarely for direct degree admission. General Training is not a substitute for Academic when Academic is specified.
Can Listening and Speaking scores transfer?
No. A Test Report Form belongs to one exam sitting; you cannot mix scores across sittings or versions.
