DTZ or telc Deutsch B1?

The DTZ is a scaled exam in the A2 to B1 range. The results show three areas: Listening and Reading combined, Writing and Speaking – plus an overall result.

telc Deutsch B1 is a proficiency exam at B1 level. The goal is to meet the passing requirements for the B1 exam; the exam structure also differs from the DTZ.

Both exams test Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, but they use different task and evaluation models.

The DTZ is the language exam at the end of the Integrationskurs and is often used in the context of integration and residency law. For an overall B1 in the DTZ, you need B1 in Speaking and additionally B1 in either Listening and Reading or in Writing – not B1 in four separately reported skills.

telc Deutsch B1 is used in many other contexts as proof of B1 language proficiency. You must clarify with the institution requiring the certificate which exam is accepted for your specific purpose.

Costs and potential funding depend on the course and exam context. For the DTZ, you clarify this with your course provider or examination center; for telc Deutsch B1, the respective examination center sets its own conditions.

First, clarify which exam the receiving institution actually accepts. For participants of an Integrationskurs, the DTZ is the regular completion path; other institutions may explicitly require telc Deutsch B1 or another recognized certificate.

Therefore, do not decide based on the supposedly simpler format, but rather on your purpose, the required recognition, and the exam format for which you can specifically prepare.
