DTZ Registration, Costs, and Dates

Registration always takes place through an approved examination center – usually a language institute, a community college (Volkshochschule), or another Integrationskurs provider. There is no central online registration with the BAMF.

If you are participating in an Integrationskurs, your course provider usually registers you automatically for the final test. You then only need to confirm the date and submit the required documents.

For participants of a subsidized Integrationskurs, the first attempt at the Prüfung is usually included in the course funding – you do not pay anything extra for it. A single free repetition is also provided under certain conditions if the target level B1 was not achieved.

If you register yourself without an Integrationskurs, you pay an examination fee. The amount is set by the examination center and varies regionally. Ask for the price in writing before binding registration to avoid any surprises later.

The most important document is a valid official identification document with a photo. Without this document, you will not be admitted on the Prüfung day – not even with a copy or a photo on your phone.

Prüfung dates are offered by the centers several times a year, often monthly. Popular dates in larger cities are booked up early; therefore, register several weeks in advance.

The registration deadline usually ends one to three weeks before the date. After the deadline, a change is often only possible with a doctor's note or for a fee – the rules are stated in your center's terms and conditions.

If you are ill on the Prüfung day, report it immediately and submit a doctor's note. Without a doctor's note, the attempt is usually considered failed and will count towards the number of subsidized attempts.
