Registering for the Level I exam of the CFA® Program takes two steps and several deadlines, and the deferral rules change for 2027.

This guide is independent educational content. Preparaio is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or reviewed by CFA Institute. Dates and fees come from CFA Institute's dates and fees data as checked on 28 October 2026; windows open at 9:00 AM and deadlines end at 11:59 PM US Eastern Time. Confirm both on the official page before you pay.

Registration in two steps

First, register and pay for a specific window in your CFA Institute account. Second, book your Prometric appointment through the CFA Program tile before the scheduling deadline. Seats are first come, first served. In Germany, centres are listed in Berlin, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Munich and Stuttgart; in Austria in Vienna; in Switzerland in Geneva and Zurich. An employer may pay, but you must register yourself, with your name exactly as in your passport.

Fees for the 2026–2027 windows

Fees are charged in US dollars; local taxes may be added at checkout. You can pay by credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express), Alipay or invoice, which has its own payment deadline.

  • Early registration: USD 1,140.
  • Standard registration: USD 1,490.
  • Enrollment fee: none. The one-time USD 350 fee was abolished for exams from February 2026; some pages still mention it, but the official data lists USD 0.

Key Level I dates by window

Each window has its own early deadline, registration close and scheduling deadline, which falls well before the exam. Use the dates for your window rather than a rule of thumb.

  • February 2027 (exam 22–28 Feb): registration closes 5 Nov 2026, scheduling deadline 10 Nov 2026.
  • May 2027 (11–17 May): early deadline 14 Oct 2026 (passed), registration closes 10 Feb 2027, scheduling deadline 16 Feb 2027.
  • August 2027 (15–22 Aug): registration opens 3 Nov 2026, early deadline 20 Jan 2027, registration closes 29 Apr 2027, scheduling deadline 6 May 2027.
  • November 2027 (13–19 Nov): further dates not yet published.

Rescheduling and forfeited fees

You can move your appointment within the same window for USD 250 plus taxes, by the rescheduling deadline (31 Oct 2026 for November 2026, 11 Feb 2027 for February, 30 Apr 2027 for May, 4 Aug 2027 for August). The fee is non-refundable, and rescheduling cannot move you to another window. If you miss your appointment, never schedule one or are turned away for lateness, your fees are forfeited.

Deferrals and refunds: what changes in 2027

The paid deferral (USD 449) exists only for 2026 exams. From the February 2027 cycle, candidates who do not sit forfeit their fees and must register again. For an initial registration, a full refund is possible within 14 days of payment; after that, fees are non-refundable.

  • Emergency deferral remains for defined cases, with a USD 100 processing fee (none if Prometric rescheduled your exam).
  • From February 2027, pregnancy no longer qualifies, except for life-threatening complications.

What the fee includes

For as long as you are registered, the fee gives you CFA Institute's Learning Ecosystem. Extras such as the printed curriculum or a Practice Pack add-on are sold separately; check current prices on the official site.

  • The full digital curriculum and more than 1,000 practice questions.
  • Two mock exams, released about 60 days before each window.
  • A study planner, flashcards and the Practical Skills Modules.

Frequently asked questions

Is early registration worth it?

Financially, yes: the early fee is USD 350 lower than the standard fee. And because seats are first come, first served, registering early also lets you book your appointment sooner.

Can I get my money back?

Only within 14 days of paying for an initial registration. After that, fees are non-refundable.

What if I cannot sit my 2027 exam?

Without a qualifying emergency, your fees are forfeited and you must register again, so choose a window you can realistically keep.

Is there still an enrollment fee?

No. The official dates data lists an enrollment fee of USD 0 for every window from November 2026 to November 2027.

How we check: Every exam-relevant fact is compared with the exam providers' official pages (g.a.s.t./TestDaF-Institut, BAMF, ETS, IELTS Partners, telc). The check is editorial, supported by AI and automated test gates; it is not a review by certified examiners.

The hard exam facts in this article were verified against the official primary sources linked below on the date shown. This is not a review by an examination body and does not replace information from your test centre. Fees, dates and local procedures are set by the test centres themselves.
