CFA® Program Level I Guides

Who can take Level I of the CFA® Program — and how often

By PreparaioEditorial team & sourcesUpdated

Before you plan study hours, check that you can register at all. Level I of the CFA® Program has entry conditions on education or experience, a strict passport rule and limits on attempts.

This guide is independent educational content. Preparaio is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or reviewed by CFA Institute. Confirm the current policies on the official CFA Institute pages before you register.

Three ways to meet the entry requirement

You need to meet one of three conditions. The route only decides whether you may register for a window; the exam is the same. For undergraduates the rule tightens later: Level II requires being within 11 months of graduation, Level III a completed degree or 4,000 hours of work experience.

  • A completed bachelor's degree or equivalent.
  • Undergraduate whose Level I window is 23 months or less before the graduation month.
  • 4,000 hours of work experience and/or higher education over at least three sequential years by the Level I registration date.

The 4,000-hour route in detail

Each year of higher education counts as 1,000 hours, and work and study periods may not overlap. The work does not have to be investment-related, and paid internships count.

Proof, conduct and other conditions

CFA Institute may ask for proof of education or experience. If you cannot provide it, it may cancel your registration, withhold or void results and open a conduct investigation, so keep your documents ready.

  • Meet all admission requirements, including professional conduct standards, and not be suspended.
  • Live in a participating country under the sanctions policy.
  • Be prepared to take the exam in English, the only exam language.
  • Register yourself; an employer or other third party may pay.

Passport: no passport, no exam

You need a valid international travel passport. On exam day it must be original, unexpired and machine-readable, and your names must match your account exactly; only small variations such as accents, ü as ue, hyphens or reversed order are tolerated. For Germany a few alternatives exist, such as the Vorläufiger Reisepass. Other exceptions must be requested at least 30 days before the exam.

Attempt limits and spacing

You may sit each level at most six times across all accounts, and a partially completed exam counts. Per calendar year you get at most two attempts, not in consecutive windows and not in windows less than six months apart. The official pages word the six-month rule slightly differently, so check the exact dates before booking a retake.

What this means for planning

Level I runs four times a year, usually in February, May, August and November, but a retake cannot be in the next window. From February 2027 there is no paid deferral: if you do not sit, your fees are forfeited and you register again. Choose a window you can genuinely prepare for.

Frequently asked questions

Does a German bachelor's degree count?

A completed bachelor's degree or equivalent qualifies. If you are unsure whether yours counts as equivalent, ask CFA Institute before you register.

Do I need finance work experience for Level I?

No. Investment-related experience matters only for the charter later: 4,000 hours over at least 36 months.

Does an exam I left halfway count?

Yes. A partially completed exam counts towards the six attempts.

Can my employer register me?

Your employer may pay, but you must register yourself.

How we check: Every exam-relevant fact is compared with the exam providers' official pages (g.a.s.t./TestDaF-Institut, BAMF, ETS, IELTS Partners, telc). The check is editorial, supported by AI and automated test gates; it is not a review by certified examiners.

The hard exam facts in this article were verified against the official primary sources linked below on the date shown. This is not a review by an examination body and does not replace information from your test centre. Fees, dates and local procedures are set by the test centres themselves.
