CFA® Program Level I: Curriculum changes in 2027
By PreparaioEditorial team & sourcesUpdated
The 2027 curriculum applies from the February 2027 exam window. CFA Institute identifies Quantitative Methods and Equities as the main areas of revision, alongside updated Ethics content. This guide explains how to check your materials and turn those changes into a study plan. It is not a substitute for the curriculum assigned to your registered exam.
This guide is independent educational content. Preparaio is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or reviewed by CFA Institute. The official announcement, curriculum update and Level I page are listed as sources below.

What needs your attention
The official update identifies these developments:
- Quantitative Methods: expanded estimation, simulation and portfolio optimization; new financial data science, AI and large-language-model coverage.
- Equities: more detailed financial forecasting, probability-weighted valuation scenarios, research reports and practical cost-of-equity estimation, including multi-factor approaches.
- Ethics: updated guidance aligned with the twelfth Standards of Practice Handbook, organized into individual Standard modules.
Turn each new phrase into a concrete check
The update also introduces interactive Equation Explorers in CFA Institute's Level I online learning ecosystem.
For preparation, turn each unfamiliar phrase into a concrete check. Can you explain the method's purpose, identify its inputs, interpret its result and recognize a limitation? A familiar equation is not enough if you cannot explain which assumptions make it useful. For a valuation scenario, for example, state what changes in the business forecast before changing the final share value.
Match the four renamed topic areas
These labels appear on the official Level I page. Use them to match your notes and question categories. A renamed heading is not evidence that every underlying concept is new, and an unchanged heading is not proof that every learning requirement is unchanged.
For the separate question of exam emphasis, use our 2027 topic-weight guide. Keep your syllabus audit and your time allocation connected, but do not substitute weights for a topic-by-topic content check.
- Corporate Issuers → Corporate Finance
- Equity Investments → Equities
- Derivatives → Derivatives and Risk Management
- Portfolio Management → Portfolio Construction
Can you still use 2026 books or notes?
Treat older material as a supplementary explanation and practice source, not as your complete 2027 checklist. Start with the current outline and learning requirements available through your registered exam resources. For each module, record the older section that appears to cover it, what you have actually checked, and what still needs a current explanation or exercise.
A useful three-column audit is current requirement, usable older explanation, and gap to resolve. Leave uncertain matches visibly uncertain. Matching chapter titles alone can hide a new method, a changed emphasis or a missing application. Equally, throwing away a sound explanation of discounting merely because its cover says 2026 wastes useful study time.
Test an apparently reusable section with a fresh exercise. First explain the assumptions without looking at the answer, then solve, and finally explain a plausible wrong approach. If you cannot do all three, record a learning gap even if the old text mentions the same terminology. Avoid declaring an entire third-party book “2027 compliant” based on a small sample.
A practical update sequence
Work through the changes in this order:
- Confirm your exam year. Keep your registration, current outline and study checklist together so material from different years is not mixed accidentally.
- Audit the revised areas first. Mark unfamiliar concepts in Quantitative Methods, Equities and Ethics before buying or rereading a complete set of resources.
- Study one gap at a time. Pair a current explanation with an original worked example and a short practice set. Write down the reason for each error.
- Return to mixed practice. Check whether you still recognize the method when the topic label is removed. A correct answer reached by an invalid assumption needs review.
- Rebalance the schedule. Give extra time to demonstrated gaps, then revisit your remaining capacity using the study planner.
How to use the practice resources
Start with the Quantitative Methods, Equities or Ethics topic pages according to your audit. Their samples help expose misunderstandings; a short set does not certify coverage of every curriculum requirement. Keep the current official outline as your coverage reference and use practice results to decide what to study next.

Frequently asked questions
When does the 2027 curriculum apply?
From the February 2027 Level I exam window. Earlier windows use the previous curriculum.
Does a renamed topic mean all of its content is new?
No. A new name is not evidence that every concept changed, and an unchanged name does not prove that nothing changed. Compare the current requirements module by module.
