CFA Institute publishes a weight range for each of the ten Level I topic areas of the CFA® Program. For exams from February 2027, several ranges change and four areas carry new names.
This guide is independent educational content. Preparaio is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or reviewed by CFA Institute. Ranges were checked against CFA Institute's Level I page on 28 October 2026. The official topic outline is for candidate use only, so we describe the areas in our own words.

The ten areas and their 2027 ranges
The first five areas form session 1, the last five session 2. In brackets: our rough question count, the range multiplied by 180 and rounded.
- Ethical and Professional Standards: 10–15% (about 18–27 questions).
- Quantitative Methods: 11–14% (about 20–25).
- Economics: 6–9% (about 11–16).
- Financial Statement Analysis: 11–14% (about 20–25).
- Corporate Finance: 6–9% (about 11–16).
- Equities: 11–14% (about 20–25).
- Fixed Income: 11–14% (about 20–25).
- Derivatives and Risk Management: 6–9% (about 11–16).
- Alternative Investments: 6–9% (about 11–16).
- Portfolio Construction: 8–12% (about 14–22).
What changed against 2026
Four ranges moved; Economics, Financial Statement Analysis, Corporate Finance, Equities, Fixed Income and Portfolio Construction keep their 2026 ranges.
- Ethical and Professional Standards: from 15–20% to 10–15%.
- Quantitative Methods: from 6–9% to 11–14%.
- Derivatives (now Derivatives and Risk Management): from 5–8% to 6–9%.
- Alternative Investments: from 7–10% to 6–9%.
Renamed areas and new content
Corporate Issuers became Corporate Finance, Equity Investments became Equities, Derivatives became Derivatives and Risk Management, and Portfolio Management became Portfolio Construction. The 2027 outline still heads the derivatives area simply "Derivatives"; it is the same area. On content, Quantitative Methods was reorganised and gains a reading on data science, AI and large language models, Equities was substantially updated, and Ethics now follows version 12 of the Standards of Practice Handbook. Older study material may not cover these changes.
How to read a range
A range is not a fixed quota. The question counts above are our own arithmetic; CFA Institute does not disclose how many points each topic carries, and every question has the same weight. What the ranges do show is concentration: Ethics, Quantitative Methods, Financial Statement Analysis, Equities and Fixed Income together account for 54–71% of the exam, roughly 97 to 128 questions.
Turning weights into study hours
Successful candidates report more than 300 study hours on average per level. On a 300-hour basis, an 11–14% area suggests about 33–42 hours and a 6–9% area about 18–27 hours. Adjust for your background: an accountant may need less time for financial reporting, an engineer less for quantitative work.
- Start with the five large areas; they decide most of the result.
- Do not skip the small ones: the four 6–9% areas together make up 24–36%, about 43–65 questions.
- There is no minimum per topic, but a very weak area is hard to offset.
Two shifts worth a closer look
Ethics drops from about 27–36 to 18–27 questions but remains one of the larger areas, and its questions reward careful reading. Quantitative Methods almost doubles, from about 11–16 to 20–25 questions, so budget more time there than 2026-era plans did.
Frequently asked questions
Do the 2027 weights apply to the November 2026 exam?
No. The 2027 changes apply from February 2027; the November 2026 window uses the 2026 ranges and names.
Is there a minimum score per topic?
No. Strong topics can offset weak ones; the score report shows your performance per topic with reference lines at 50% and 70%.
Why are the question counts only approximate?
The weights are ranges, CFA Institute does not publish points per topic, and the exam may contain unscored questions.
Where can I see the detailed learning outcomes?
In the official 2027 topic outline from CFA Institute, available to candidates. We do not reproduce it.
