Both exams certify B1 competence at CEFR level and are recognised by universities, employers, and authorities. Structure and retake logic differ in ways that can matter to your choice.
Inhalt
Modular exam vs. full exam
The Goethe-Zertifikat B1 is modular: you can take the four modules (Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking) separately and pass or retake them individually.
The telc Deutsch B1 is taken as a whole with a written and an oral part. If only one of these fails, you can usually retake that part once; there is no per-skill modular retake.
Task formats
Both exams follow the CEFR and cover comparable competences. Specific task types differ in places — e.g. "Sprachbausteine" in this form only exist in telc B1.
Choose only after looking at an official model test for each.
Recognition
Both are accepted for citizenship, training, professions with language requirements, and many university access paths. Check the accepting body's rules concretely.
How to decide
Modular flexibility important, mixed profile (e.g. strong speaker, weaker writer)? Goethe's modular structure helps.
Prefer the rhythm of a full exam and a single date? telc B1 is organisationally simpler.
